Liberian Educational System is not Fixed Yet

The recent West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) results revealed that the Liberian educational system is not ready. Only 52.71 percent of the total 42,926 students met the standards for graduation in 2022. (Source, FPA) In 2022, no student has passed all nine subjects.

Our nation's educational system needs an objective review to determine the factors affecting learning in the country. Education is the lifeblood of a country. An inferior education impacts graduates' ability to contribute to the development of their country. The areas that need an investigation are:

  • Is the Liberian national curriculum relevant and aligned with the testing curriculum of the West African States?
  • Does Liberia have qualified teachers in the classrooms?
  • Are the schools using modern teaching approaches to deepen students' understanding of subject matters?
  • What ethical standards for the students, teachers, and administrators could ensure best practices?

The educational system of Liberia is not contributing to our nation's well-being. The best way to address Liberia's economic, social, and political challenges is to educate our present young generation properly. The government of Liberia needs to contract competent educational researchers to take on this critical task.
