When the government claims that the state of the Liberian economy is strong, contradicting economic challenges facing the people is a misrepresentation of the citizens. Liberia is a donor-depending nation. Therefore, it is not in the country's best interest to tell the world that the government is doing well economically when it is not. The state of the economy is not strong when the unemployment rate exceeds 75 percent, healthcare is deplorable, the education sector shows no sign of improvement, and other critical areas continue to struggle.
Liberians abroad need to support the effort of ending more than 173-year-old institutionalized corruption and unacceptable practices in Liberia. The Liberian lawmakers approved the 2024 Liberian Budget for US$ 738,859.827 and unveiled 95% of recurring costs, a significant portion of which was earmarked for salaries and benefits. However, the bulk of these funds, a staggering amount, is allocated to the lawmakers themselves, leaving teachers, police officers, nurses, and other civil servants struggling to make ends meet.
In the face of a high unemployment rate, one of the most difficult challenges, Liberians have shown remarkable resilience. Since Liberia's first post-civil war democratically elected government in 2006, the unemployment rate has been a pressing issue. Despite this, many Liberians are finding innovative ways to support their families, such as selling locally produced products. However, due to financial constraints, there are limited buyers for these low-cost products in the market.
The recent disagreement between the executive and legislative branches of the Liberian government over the import of the 285 yellow machines, crucial for repairing roads across the country, raises serious questions about good governance. These machines are urgently needed, and the president and his team's efforts to bring them into the country are greatly appreciated. However, it's crucial to remember that transparency and accountability are not negotiable, regardless of the urgency and necessity of the situation.
According to local and international researchers, Liberians are not doing well under the Pro-Poor Agenda. More than 50% of Liberians live in poverty, while corruption is increasing and disproportionally affecting the poor.
